Mathematics Area

In this area, Dr. Montessori gives the child the experiences of the concrete involvement prior the abstract ideas, within 3 to 6 years old, the child is naturally interested in mathematics and with proper nurturing; the child will flourish with the development in mathematical mind.
In order for a child to distinguish one from more than one, he needs the ability to abstract. Although the abstraction is hard for young child, it can be facilitated. The child’s ability to abstract is an individual process, which cannot occur unless a child has a certain level of understanding. Therefore the first requirement for it is to understand the concept. At a certain moment, the child worked with the materials, and eventually the child arrive his mathematic mind. Child passes through the sensorial exploration to the basic impression to level of an exploration in mathematic. Math material is concrete basis for the child to develop abstract ideas. Because the child can only internalize concept when the child can manipulate it, this makes the child to come into the physical contact with a concept which is otherwise in the abstract.
